Neil Gaiman has announced that his popular series, “Sandman” will be continuing under Vertigo comics. Gaiman will be working with artist J.H. Williams III to tell the story of Morpheus before he was captured, according to Shelly Bond, executive editor of the imprint of DC Entertainment.

The new series will be called “The Sandman: Overture,” and will appear bi-monthly starting Oct. 30 in comic shops and as well as digitally.

“Sandman” has sold more than 7 million copies in nine languages. The epic story with incredibly mythology was penned by Gaiman more than a decade ago but continues to be a cult classic while enticing new fans every day. It ran for 75 issues from January 1989 until March 1996.

The Sandman was one of Vertigo’s flagship titles, and is available as a series of ten trade paperbacks. It has also been reprinted in a recolored five-volume Absolute hardcover edition with slipcase. Critically acclaimed, “The Sandman” is one of the few graphic novels ever to be on the New York Times Best Seller list, along with Watchmen and The Dark Knight Returns. It was one of five graphic novels to make Entertainment Weeklys “100 best reads from 1983 to 2008”, ranking at 46. Norman Mailer described the series as “a comic strip for intellectuals.”

DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson called the return to the “lush, evocative world” Gaiman created with Sandman “a literary event.”
