So I JUST finished The Last of Us this past Sunday and then promptly sobbed uncontrollably dripping tears into my red velvet pop-tarts (yes, they make these!). If you haven’t tried this game yet, you are severely missing out and not having a PS3 is no excuse. The PS3 exclusive title was so enticing, I borrowed a console and a copy of the game just play it. Most of the world seems to agree as Sony Computer Entertainment announced that the global sales for the game have officially exceeded 3.4 million units. This figure includes both Blu-ray disc sell-in number and download version as of July 3rd.

This milestone comes less than three weeks since the game was globally released on June 14th. The Last of Us continues to receive wide critical acclaim from game critics and fans while definitely giving the Xbox release, BioShock Infinite, a run for the coveted Game of the Year award.

The Last of Us delivers an evocative journey of survival in a world radically transformed, twenty years after a virulent pandemic of the cordyceps fungus has ravaged the human population. The rich story provides a realistic experience that explores the depths of humanity through main characters Joel and Ellie. Their journey is rife with emotionally charged moments as the narrative centers on themes of survival, loyalty, love and redemption.

“These sales figures are a testament to the blockbuster quality of ‘The Last of Us,'” said Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios. “The teams at Naughty Dog are true visionaries and their storytelling capabilities are second to none, this title is an undisputed demonstration of that. SCE continues to be committed to delivering unique gameplay experiences that redefine the interactive entertainment industry and ‘The Last of Us’ is a perfect example.”

In the game, you, the player, takes control of Joel (voiced and motion captured by Troy Baker), who is trekking across a post-apocalyptic United States in 2033, in order to escort the young Ellie (voiced and motion captured by Ashley Johnson) to a friendly resistance group, the Fireflies. The player defends the characters against zombie-like creatures infected with the Cordyceps fungus, as well as hostile humans such as bandits and cannibals, using different techniques to get through different areas of the US. The player can also craft weapons or medical items by combining items scavenged in the world.
